If you’re thinking of doing your engagement photos in Hocking Hills or proposing in Hocking Hills, there are several things to consider. That’s why I put together this little guide of all the things you might need! In this guide, I’ll go over timing, ease of access, give some tips, and provide several images of my favorite spots around Hocking hills for the perfect engagement photos.

Best spots for engagement photos at Hocking Hills State Park

Hocking Hills is located in Logan, Ohio just about an hour from Columbus. It’s filled with 25 miles of walking trails, hiking, waterfalls, stunning rock features, and more. But, there are two locations within the park that are the easiest to access and provide stunning backdrops: Upper Falls and Ash Cave.

Upper Falls

Upper Falls is probably one of the most recognizable parts of Hocking Hills with the bridge overlooking the waterfall and pool. If there hasn’t been recent rain, the waterfall can dry up, but it’s still a stunning backdrop for all of your photos. It’s conveniently located near the visitor center with a large parking lot. The trail entrance is marked with a sign and leads down some stairs to the waterfall and pond area. From there, you can keep hiking the trail to find more picturesque spots. But, be prepared for some elevation changes and stairs. Click here for a guide and map to the area!

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is about a 10 minute drive from the Upper Falls area with its own parking lot as well. It’s a much easier walk with most of the area being flat, however it’s much more sandy. There is another waterfall and pool here that falls over the large ledge in the rainier seasons. Click here for a guide and map for this area!

Hocking Hills Engagement Photos: Things to keep in mind

Taking your engagement photos at Hocking Hills is going to require some advanced planning. There is no cell phone reception in the park, so GPS and maps will not be available. It’s very important to look up and save routes offline ahead of time so you don’t get lost. The park also gets very busy on the weekends, holidays, and as the day progresses. So, if you want less background people in your photos, I suggest going on a weekday or very early in the morning. Also make sure to bring comfortable and safe shoes for the hike! You can always change into other shoes once you reach your photo spots. Happy hiking!
