Congratulations on your engagement!! Hopefully you’ve had some time to enjoy being newly engaged, but I’m sure you’re excited to get those engagement photos done! If you have no idea where to begin looking for a location for your photos, you can start here. I’ve put together a list of 6 of the best (free!) toledo engagement photo locations so you can see what vibe is best for you.
Toledo Botanical Garden
This is located near The University of Toledo! It’s over 60 acres of trees, flowers, gardens, and paths for you to explore. There is also a pond with a fountain and several statues. They are open to the public during daylight hours, however no pets are allowed. So, if you wanted to include your furry friends in your photos, take a look at the next few options! Wildwood Preserve Metropark
This park is only a couple miles from the Botanical Garden, so this is a great alternative if you’re looking to include your dog(s). Wildwood has a similar vibe, but a little more spread out. There are several trails, one that leads to a covered bridge, lots of areas of tall grass and trees, and a garden with statues near the Manor House.
Downtown Toledo
If you’re looking for more of an industrial or city vibe, consider going downtown! There are several alleyways and quieter streets that can give a more urban feel. One part of downtown I love is located near Maddie and Bella Coffee in the Toledo Warehouse District (S St. Clair St, middle photo below). Stop in for some coffee if you’re that way! Other spots I like are Promenade Park (left photo) and Levis Square Park (right photo).
Toledo Engagement Photo Locations: Commodore Parking Garage
Another great spot downtown is the public parking garage near Fifth Third Field. If you go up to the top, you get an incredible view of the city. It makes a beautiful spot for golden hour and sunsets! It’s located right across from Pizza Papalis and there is street parking along the roads so you don’t need to pay to park in the garage.
Oak Openings Metropark
If you’re up for a little drive, these next spots are also gorgeous and give a different vibe than a park. Oak Openings is famous for its tall pine trees (aka “the spot”). However, there are several other places that you can go as well. I prefer to stay along that same road where the spot is (intersection of Monclova Rd and Girdham Rd area) where there are some open areas to let some sun through!
Toledo Engagement Photo Locations: Maumee Bay State Park
Finally, Maumee Bay State Park of course has a beachy vibe! There is the public beach, but also a more secluded beach connected to it that makes a great photo spot. Additionally, there are areas of tall grass and a giant hill that can provide some variety. Dogs are technically not allowed on the beach, but they are allowed in the surrounding areas.
How to choose your Toledo engagement photo location
Next, let’s talk about how to pick one! The location for your Toledo engagement session should really just represent who you are as a couple. If you’re more outdoorsy, one of the parks might be best, or if you’re more of a homebody, consider doing an in-home session! Or, you could choose a place that’s special to you, such as a favorite local coffee shop or record store. Maybe even the place you met or had your first date!
What to wear for your Toledo engagement photos
This can be a stressful decision, but luckily I’m here to give you some tips! Check out any of the images above for some inspiration. Here are a few things to consider when putting your outfits together:
- Pick a color palette and stick to it. Adding in a pattern or a texture can be a good way to bring some variety without clashing. If you don’t both have outfits in one color palette, neutrals are always a safe option!
- Dress like you’re going on a date. You want to be comfortable so you can move around and have fun, but still look nice. Jeans, sweaters, casual dresses, button down shirts, etc. are all great options. Also, adding in your favorite accessories can make it feel more like you.
- Consider your photographer’s style. If you hired a photographer who edits really moody and warm, a bright blue shirt might not look the best. I recommend going to their Instagram page and seeing what other couples wore if you’re not sure!
- Lastly, beware of distractions in your outfits. Don’t wear baseball caps (they put harsh shadows on your face) or transition lenses. If you can, get a backup pair of glasses or even a fake pair, because it’s very hard to edit shaded lenses. Also, make sure hair ties and any smart watches are off your wrist and nothing is in your pockets!
I hope this is helpful! This of course isn’t all of the engagement photo locations in Toledo, but just some of my favorites. Check out my wedding venue guide next to get started on your venue search! Thank you for reading!
I’m Laura, a wedding photographer for couples that want to remember all the feelings from their wedding- how you felt when you saw your almost husband at the end of the aisle, or when THAT song got played at the reception. I’ll probably be out on the dance floor with you during it too. If you’re interested in talking more with me, contact me here.
